The Symptoms and Effects of Sexual Abuse
The reports of alleged abuse at the daycare are heartbreaking, as sexual abuse has both immediate and lifelong consequences for victims. Some children are too young to understand what is happening and may have difficulty reporting the abuse to parents or other authority figures.
Children who are victims of abuse may exhibit various symptoms, including:
- Trouble sleeping
- Avoidance of certain people or areas
- Self-injurious behavior
- Knowledge of and/or interest in sexual things
- Avoidance of physical touch
Sexual abuse victims may suffer from depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, and poor self-esteem, among others, for years after the abuse occurred.
