Personal Injury Lawyers Serving Richmond Since 1979
Cantor Stoneburner Ford Grana & Buckner began in 1979 when Irv Cantor and Tom Rilee established the law firm of Rilee and Cantor. Two years later, Bruce Arkema and Steve Edmonds joined them to form Rilee, Cantor, Arkema & Edmonds. Irv Cantor headed the firm’s personal injury section, primarily with insurance defense cases. A few years later, Irv would pivot into plaintiff cases, deciding to step away from insurance defense to represent injury victims.
Stanley Joynes would be hired as an associate in the early 1980s, and would serve the firm as part of the counsel for future claimants in the Dalkon Shield bankruptcy case in 1987. This case lasted for several years, and is still considered a landmark case in bankruptcy law and mass torts.
In 1991, the firm received an influx of new attorneys when the Richmond law firm of Browder Russell split up. With these new additions to the team, the firm again changed its name—they were now Rilee, Cantor, and Russell. The head of Browder Russell’s litigation section, Aubrey Ford, also joined the firm at this time, bringing the total firm size to nearly 25 lawyers.
Years later, the medical malpractice defense attorneys from Browder Russell left the firm, while Irv Cantor’s team of Richmond personal injury attorneys continued to expand. The law firm (now called Cantor Arkema) was then joined by a veteran trial attorney with an extensive history of success with medical malpractice plaintiff cases—Lewis Stoneburner.
Forming into a Richmond Plaintiff Litigation Firm
Through the late 1990s and the early 2000s, the firm of Cantor Arkema continued to grow in plaintiff litigation. In fact, the firm had refocused on two main areas of practice: business litigation and plaintiff litigation. Plaintiff litigation then included Irv Cantor, Lewis Stoneburner, Aubrey Ford, Stephanie Grana, and Elliott Buckner, as well as other lawyers and staff.
The plaintiff trial law section achieved massive victories, securing large verdicts and settlements on a consistent basis—often setting state records or ranking among the largest trial results in Virginia.
Some of our most significant results from that time often broke records in their respective districts, including:
- $5.95 million for a North Carolina medical malpractice victim
- $4.5 million for a motor vehicle accident victim in Virginia County
- $5 million for the victim of an industrial explosion
- $5 million for a motorcycle accident injury victim
Thanks to their acumen and insight, our Richmond injury attorneys were also voted into leadership roles in state and national legal organizations. However, our relentless dedication to excellence is not limited to our attorneys—Lori Tracoma, one of our senior personal injury assistants, was named “The National Paralegal of the Year” by the American Association of Justice at their 2008 conference in Philadelphia.
The Formation of Cantor Stoneburner Ford Grana & Buckner
In 2009, our plaintiff trial lawyers decided to form their own law firm, dedicated exclusively to serious plaintiff injury, malpractice and commercial cases. The newly organized firm was named Cantor Stoneburner Ford Grana & Buckner. Today, our Virginia personal injury lawyers serve our clients with the same knowledge, insight, relentlessness, and compassion that we have had since 1979.
