Anoxic Brain Injury

What is an anoxic brain injury?

An anoxic brain injury is an injury to the brain caused by a lack of oxygen. Brain cells begin to die if deprived of oxygen for four minutes or longer. Anoxia means total lack of oxygen. Hypoxia means lack of an adequate supply of oxygen. Ischemia means inadequate supply of blood and can cause anoxia or hypoxia.

What are the symptoms of anoxic brain injury?

Death is often the result when the brain is deprived of oxygen. If a person survives a period of anoxia or hypoxia, the results can range from profound conditions, such as vegetative or minimally responsive states, to more subtle conditions, such as problems with motor skills, balance, speech, or cognition.

What are the causes of anoxic brain injury?

Any event, whether internal or external to one’s body, that interferes with the brain’s ability to receive or process oxygen can cause anoxic brain injury. Some of the causes of anoxic brain injury are: medical malpractice, such as problems with anesthesia, intubations, extubations, child birth, inordinate bleeding, and other complications; trauma from accidents; drowning; smoke inhalation; carbon monoxide exposure; and other events that cause a disruption of oxygen or excessive bleeding.

Why do you need an attorney experienced in anoxic brain injuries?

Proving the source and cause of anoxia or hypoxia is often difficult and complex. Many cases require the attorney to have a keen awareness of the relevant anatomy and physiology. Likewise, since the impairment from an anoxic brain injury typically involves multiple human body functions, knowledge of such functions is important. An attorney who knows how to meet these challenges and who has successfully handled anoxic brain injury cases should be consulted in these cases.

Traumatic Brain Injury Team

Our traumatic brain injury team is headed by Irvin V. Cantor, who has handled virtually every type of brain injury case, including traumatic, anoxic, hypoxic, ischemic, and metabolic injuries over the course of his career. He has represented hundreds of victims of traumatic brain injury and has achieved over 30 recoveries exceeding a million dollars. Brain injury cases now constitute the majority of his practice. The vast majority of Mr. Cantor’s cases are referrals from lawyers, physicians, and previous clients. Mr. Cantor has handled brain injury cases throughout Virginia and other locations in the United States.

In addition to Mr. Cantor, the other attorneys on our traumatic brain injury team are all seasoned trial attorneys. We also have a full staff of experienced legal assistants, a full time investigator, and a part-time registered nurse. We have a working relationship with some of the most recognized brain injury experts in the U.S. We routinely enlist the services of forensic engineers, physicians who specialize in brain injury, neuropsychologists, neuroradiologists, life care planners, vocational rehabilitation specialists, medical illustrators, and jury consultants in our brain injury cases. We often utilize mock trials and focus groups to analyze our cases. Our goal is to provide our clients with a vigorous and thorough prosecution of their claims by a veteran team.
