May Is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

It’s no coincidence that you start to notice more motorcycles on the roads around this time of year. The weather is finally warming up and motorcyclists are eager to get on their bikes and enjoy the ride in the warm sun. While these riders enjoy this thrilling experience, it’s also very dangerous when precautions are not taken.

According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, there were 2,048 motorcycle crashes in Virginia in 2021, and 102 motorcyclists were killed in fatal crashes. The months with the highest number of motorcycle crashes were May (286), September (267), and June (256).

It is easy to assume that the majority of these crashes were due to speeding, however, only twenty-seven percent (552) of the crashes were speed-related, while six percent (121) were alcohol-related and three percent (56) involved both speed and alcohol. What you may not realize is that the majority of motorcycle crashes in Virginia happen during perfect weather conditions, on a straight road with zero drug or alcohol impairment.

What can you do as a motorcyclist to prevent crashes and injuries? While Virginia requires drivers and riders to wear helmets, it is also highly recommended to wear protective clothing to help minimize possible injuries. Drivers are also encouraged to take a motorcycle safety course. According to the Virginia DMV, 77% of motorcyclists killed in 2021 did not take a motorcycle safety course.

Automobile drivers are also urged to take precautions this time of year. I’m sure you’ve heard of the phrase look twice, save a life. This is especially important to take into consideration when you are pulling out into an intersection and making a left turn. Motorcycles naturally accelerate faster than cars and it’s important to be extra vigilant and make sure you have enough time to get into your lane safely. Blind spots are also a big proponent in accidents and it’s recommended to check them carefully because motorcycles are much smaller than cars and can hide much easier in your blind spots.

If you or someone you know was in a motorcycle accident due to someone else’s negligence, call a personal injury attorney. You may be entitled to compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other losses. Working with an experienced Virginia motorcycle accident lawyer can help you maximize the compensation you receive from the insurance company.
