Cantor named as Leader in the Law for contributions to profession and community

RICHMOND, Va. (October 21, 2010) – The law firm of Cantor Stoneburner Ford Grana & Buckner is proud to announce that the firm’s founding partner and attorney Irvin V. Cantor has been named to Virginia Lawyers Weekly’s “Leaders in the Law” Class of 2010.

Cantor’s practice consists of representing persons who have suffered serious injuries or death. He was voted by his peers as one of the "Top 50 Virginia Super Lawyers," and is listed in Best Lawyers in America in both personal injury litigation and medical malpractice law. He is also AV® rated, Martindale-Hubbell’s highest rating for legal ability and ethical standards. Cantor has served as president of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, the Brain Injury Association of Virginia and the Virginia Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He served as the chairman of the Brain Injury Association of America’s National Legal Conference for the last two years.

“Irv is one of an increasingly rare breed – he is a true, old-fashioned, lawyer’s lawyer,” said partner Elliott M. Buckner. “He is painstakingly thorough, a detail nut, a recognized expert in his practice areas, a respected and accomplished trial lawyer, and held in the highest esteem by his colleagues and the judges before whom he appears. But beyond that, what truly makes him a lawyer’s lawyer and so worthy of this award is his absolute and unwavering dedication to his clients, his profession, and his community,” said Buckner.

“Irv’s entire professional life revolves around a very simple, albeit too-often forgotten, principle – the client comes first,” said partner Stephanie E Grana. Irv has always had a passionate commitment to helping “the little guy,” and he understands that when a client selects him as their attorney, they have entrusted him with their future, to be their voice and to help them repair their shattered lives. He does not take this duty lightly and his commitment on behalf of his clients is reflected not only in the tremendous awards he has achieved over the years, but it is also measured by the number of clients who continue to stay in touch with him long after their cases are over,” said Grana

“Irv’s community involvement has had a reach far beyond his profession. Much of Irv’s professional life has been dedicated to representing individuals with brain injuries. During his presidency with the Brain Injury Association of Virginia (BIAV), Irv developed a charity golf tournament, which he continues to chair, which has turned into a significant source of unencumbered funds for BIAV and allows them to continue their work on behalf of survivors and their families. Irv was recognized this year by BIAV for his work and support with the prestigious Weinstock Award, which is given to individuals who have made unique and lasting contributions to BIAV and the brain injury community in Virginia,” said Grana. Anne McDonnell, BIAV executive director, said in presenting the Weinstock Award, “Irv provided strong guidance and steady leadership through a period of great transition, and BIAV has benefitted from his vision of the future of the organization. He has always provided a quiet leadership and works diligently behind the scenes for brain injured individuals and their families. He believes in the mission of the Brain Injury Association of Virginia.”

Irv has lectured to trial lawyers on numerous subjects, including traumatic brain injuries, motor vehicle collisions, liability insurance coverage and elements of trial. He is on the faculty of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association College of Trial Advocacy. He has written many published articles and was the author of the chapter dealing with the legal aspects of traumatic brain injury cases for the seminal medical textbook on the subject, Brain Injury Medicine

Virginia Lawyers Weekly Leaders in the Law seeks to recognize lawyers who have made outstanding contributions to the practice of law in Virginia, have significant achievements through the practice of law, have demonstrated leadership in improving the justice system or have made important contributions to Virginia’s legal community and/or the community at large. Cantor is one of only 31 Virginia attorneys to receive this honor. He will be recognized at a reception on October 21, 2010 at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond.
